Crucial tips for identifying and entering RSU stock transactions

  • Ask clients if any RSU are included in stocks transactions.

  • Identify on 1099-B any stock what's up transactions associated with the same company name on W2.

  • Always look for stock transactions on 1099 B with no cost basis (often RSU stocks do not have cost basis reported to IRS)

  • Always look for supplemental info attached to 1099 B (cost basis and adjusted cost basis)

  • If no basis can be found request the notice of vesting letter be provided by client which also list the pertinent info. This is not a standard letter so not as convenient as the supplemental info to the 1099-b and will be discussed further in later section.
